DC’s Legends of Tomorrow “Guest Starring John Noble” Review
The adventure of the Legends is one to look forward to every week. This is a show where there’s no problem with being able to laugh one minute, and feel raw emotion the next minute. Last week was a great example of just that between training our new totem bearer, and losing another. Not to mention the revelation of just what makes Ava so special. Again I’m kind of glad they dodged what fans were theorizing as her being related to Booster Gold.
Through this episode we finally get back to something major in history. With the idea that all Mallus needs is big enough wrinkles in history, that means there needed to be more pro-active moves made by the villains to make that happen. The back and forth for the totems has been nice so far, but nothing of course that will get the Darhks or Grodd any closer to releasing Mallus from his cage. Before jumping into this episode we were aware that the Legends would tackle two anachronisms at the same time in an effort to keep Mallus at bay. Little time was wasted diving into the first one, and that was a shocker considering the point in time was more modern than some of the other points visited. Encountering Grodd there was a fairly quick confrontation. I wished there was more to him as a threat, though for the sake of pacing he wasn’t that big of a player in this war.
Who the Legends turn to for help shook things up in a big way since they aren’t having the best luck at keeping up with Mallus and friends. These were desperate times and this was one of those enemy of my enemy situations. This was definitely the push that the team needed when right now a sense of urgency has to be felt for us to believe that time is running out. Tensions were rising which created the opportunity for bolder moves to be made. Some stepped out of their comfort zone for what came next. This plan they hatched was thinking outside of the box when it took them to the set of a very popular movie, and to engage with someone who you would have never guessed to appear in a show like this.
Getting to that point where it was down to that last crack to release Mallus it could have been hit or miss. On one hand there was a fairly predictable outcome that came from a predictable character moment. On the other hand there was still the satisfaction of the instance where the Legends come to realize just what it means for someone to fight for the ones they love. Everyone has their way of going about it whether right or wrong. The fun regardless was seeing just who would hold the rest of the totems. Some were meant to have one, while the other two pretty much had one because someone had to.
Second of the two big anachronisms would be Amaya’s attempt to change her families fate. Nate and Wally trying to stop Amaya from changing her future was a point of interest because there wasn’t anything they could really do in that moment that could stop what was about to unfold. Not unless they could find the magical words to fix a currently broken heart. This was a unique moment for Nate having him aware of what he actually decided to do once he confronted Amaya. Not too shocking, but anything else would have simply felt out of character for him at this stage in his relationship with her. On Amaya’s end, it was heartwarming to follow her efforts to make change. We got to see a big contrast between the person she is now, and the person she becomes without the memories of what came before.
The Darhk’s situation is interesting since Damien is now coming to terms with the decision he made. Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t enjoy the idea that you could care for the things a villain does or their regrets, but with Damien its different. We’ve come a long way with his involvement since being brought back to life. Having Nora at his side was a father-daughter dynamic as admirable as the one in Black Lightning. To have his eyes open that allowing his own daughter to be taken host by a demon would also mean losing her in the process was a hard reality check.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow “Guest Starring John Noble” was a roller coaster of action and emotion from start to finish. Plenty was at stake here and that pushed some characters to make choices they would not have under different circumstances. This season so far they have acted as the scalpel, but now was the time to become the chainsaw once again which delivered the best results. Including the guest appearance of John Noble.
