Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “All the Comforts of Home” Review
I have to say, comic book shows are killing me these days with the weird schedules. Maybe it has to do with Olympic stuff, maybe it has to do with something else, but it is torture when you can’t go one season without a one or two breaks. Midseasons have been an adjustment, though that maybe one month that comes out of the blue hits hard. Especially when it comes to where Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. last left off finally returning home. This is where they either fall prey to the timeloop again, or break the cycle before that future comes to be.
Quickly this episode jumps into this new character who they have been hyping up. I wasn’t too shocked to see that the character who Dove Cameron plays is connected to General Hale. Even before the news outlets jumped at the reveal of her role it was pretty obvious despite the hype, if she were anyone else it might be distracting to introduce another new character. With that said, it was the introduction needed to get inside the head of General Hale and her motivation to take down S.H.I.E.L.D.. Especially to understand the lengths she will go to stand a fighting chance.
There was still a lot to anticipate from what comes next with their return. Coulson is dying, Daisy will clearly not be happy with being dragged back to the present, the General and her orders, and of course the moment when Daisy might tear the world apart. That’s a lot to tackle in the second half of the season, but this wouldn’t be the action-packed show we know it to be if things were ever that clear-cut. When we got back to the team, everyone had their own way of adjusting to the present. The mix of reactions said enough about what they have been through. Either quick to get back to work, worrying about the next problem, or soaking in a second chance. It was a good start in general that with this new chapter they are opening the doors to new exploration off the bat. A new character to take up that role of a guide, and new base with all sorts of secret goodies. It was like dropping their mess onto a new blank canvas.
The status quo changes-up here and that much was a point of interest. The expectation was that things would be different given the time that had passed. It was a good kind of different because what we love most about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is when they are actually being agents. Working from the shadows is when they tend to be at their best. The spy games have begun once again and the feeling is good. This episode was the full package when between the action and suspense of making their next move. If anyone was wondering if there would be a legitimate threat to face on the other side, they delivered. It was only unfortunate to say that this was at the cost of accepting that there are some things about the future that you can’t escape. Finding out that their efforts would dramatically change one S.H.I.E.L.D. agent’s life was the best way to make a statement.
It is now that Daisy has been dragged to the present where she begins making her choices in how to avoid her lethal destiny. For her this is like getting back to basics, which doesn’t hurt when she isn’t just Quake. Having a contrasting role helps to maintain diversity in who does what.
I was shocked by a certain familiar face that was hard to explain being here and in this time. It made some of the apparent losses from the future not seem so bad. I didn’t think there would be any source of humor at this stage with what’s on the line, but they nailed it for even that moment. You pretty much knew how that first experience would go, as the usual goes for people who are “Not from here”. That aside, I hope that the next few episodes push to give this character more relevance to current events so to justify this story decision.
“And we’re back”, music to the ears when the job is never done for these agents. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “All the Comforts of Home” takes us from one war into the next. Just another day for the agents when it is almost as if the world is against them. Well, let’s be honest, it practically is given what they are going through. At the end of the day it is great to have Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back, and hopefully to stay until the end of the season.
