Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Winter Finale “What They Become” Review
It has been one heck of a second season for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. It was either you loved this show from the very beginning or you struggled to find out if this was the right one for you. Luckily by the second season majority would say that there was much to anticipate every week. With S.H.I.E.L.D. all but nothing after the event of Captain America: The Winter Soldier things got real. Less time for jokes and more focus on being the team they were meant to be which meant more action, and seeing much more of what they offer as individuals when the odds are stacked against them.
What is great about Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “What They Become” is that for once Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is ahead of the game in terms of progression in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Usually it has been all about how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. connected to the rest of the world, though this time around things look like they will center around what is happening in the show right now. We all know what is in store for us when it comes to the Inhumans, but this episode and the whole season is about making sense of it all to make it a reality. The suspense in this episode surely was maddening, we all want answers and knowing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. they love to make you wait for it. All worth it of course when Coulson and Whitehall’s forces meet in an explosive confrontation that dramatically alters everyone’s fates.
The moment between Skye and her dad has been long-awaited as those of us who speculated who she may really be understood their relationship in terms of the comics. Cal dragged it on a bit, but the emotion from it was all real as he delivered unto Skye the shocking secrets about her past and her mother. Everything up to him trying to make his move against he who took almost everything from him. That is even though it was torture that it didn’t manifest the way you expected it to, it is just good that we now know Skye’s name to be EXACTLY as we expected when everything was said and done.
Still hopefully something more comes out of this secret that Bobbi is carrying, though with everything else going on you aren’t too bothered with what you don’t know. It could be addressed in the next half of the season to greater lengths which is why you could overlook that not too much is happening that would leave us hanging. It’s just nice that we are seeing a lot more range from Hunter who always came off as someone who was needed to lighten a serious moment. His dynamic with Bobbi pretty much makes up for everything they lack as individuals.
At the end of the day it is what happens between Skye and Raina is what we were waiting for most. That is what was most satisfying about this episode. Especially when finding out that there was a third-party involved much to our despair. Either way that was a graceful moment for Skye, and even though her fate and Raina is still up in the air in terms of what the Diviner or what we can now call the Terrigen Crystal.
This winter finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is everything you could have wanted and more. Skye’s secret is revealed, big changes await and nothing will be the same after this. We want to come back to this show and not know what to expect, and that will happen only because the story structure of the show has improved to the point where they were able to give us a definite beginning and end that leaves all questions we had up to this point answered while leaving room for more to come after.
