Punisher: Trial of the Punisher #1

by

This issue is part one of two for this limited series, staring the Punisher. In this issue we see the Punisher turn himself into the police for murdering the D.A. This is the big twist that kicks this limited series off. As fans we can’t help but feel like this is all part of the Punisher’s plan. The writer, Marc Guggenheim, makes his big return to Marvel since his work in DC (Arrow). The art was done beautifully by Leinil Franic Yu (Superior, Indestructible Hulk)

The issue read pretty confusingly. It felt as though there were time jumps, but after reading it a second time, I’m not so sure. You do have to love this take on the Punisher though. He’s dark and brooding and everything we love in the Punisher. Some could complain that the violence is very scarce which one wouldn’t expect from a Punisher book. But honestly the change of pace works well for this book because you expect at any moment, the Punisher to snap and kill everyone. It is great to see the Punisher in this light because his personality keeps us on the edge of our seat the entire read. This issue alone doesn’t reveal too much, which does make the second issue a must have to understand what the heck is going on. All in all this issue was very solid and a great representation of the Punisher.

Bottom Line

Punisher: Trial of the Punisher #1 was a good issue. The Punisher feels as dark as ever. The art is amazing and the story is unique. The pacing feels a bit confusing so a second read may be needed, but the comic is great both times. This is a limited series with only two issues, so the second issue could very much make or break this series.
