Smart ways to Boost Garage Door Security

Burglars can break into a garage in several ways, even one with an automatic door. We have tips and recommendations for you so that you can secure your home and garage.

Install Floodlights

Burglars like night protection and many rely on dark shadows around the garage to hide their suspicious attempts to enter the house. Installing floodlights which activate near windows and garage doors makes burglars think twice about a burglary at night. Motion detectors on the floodlights are particularly helpful in keeping free-standing garages illuminated if someone is around them.

Keep the Door Closed

The most important tip is to make sure that the garage door does not remain open, especially when you are not at home. This seems like an obvious suggestion, but it’s easy to switch to autopilot mode if you’re in a hurry to work in the morning.

Check your Landscape

Bolder burglars don’t mind sneaking around the house in broad daylight, but they still use the cover that a well-placed tree or bush provides near a garage door or window. Make sure neighbors and pedestrians can see everything near the garage, removing large trees and bushes and keeping entry points visible from the street.

Planting small prickly shrubs under the windows of the garage on the ground floor can also help to prevent breaking in this way.

Get a Garage Door Timer

The garage door timer is also a great device, which will help you to never forget to close the garage door when you leave the house and even after returning home. Of course, there are situations when you want to leave the garage door open for a long time – for example, when working in the yard or cleaning the garage – a good timer can be temporarily turned off in such a case.

Hide the Inside of the Garage with Frozen Windows

The windows enliven the appearance of the garage door and let in natural light. Unfortunately, potential thieves tend to look in the windows, look for expensive tools and check if all cars have disappeared – it’s a good sign that nobody is home, which can lead to a burglary. By adding a layer of matte film, you will prevent fraudsters from seeing what’s inside while the light is still able to reach the interior.

Monitor Activity with an Intelligent Garage Door Opener

Openers provide a certain level of security for garage doors, because they lock the door in the lowest position. But the determined burglar may still be able to open the door – or hack the code. Thanks to the intelligent opening mechanism, you can monitor the garage door status and receive notifications on your smartphone when someone opens it, so you can immediately notify law enforcement.

Make sure your Garage Doors are in Good Condition

Old garage doors that are warped, have a faded color and do not provide a tight seal on the door, not only detract from the attractiveness of the curb and affect the energy efficiency of the house. They are also responsible for home security. The burglar can get into the garage more easily through the slots or openings that a ruined garage door may have.

Replace your outdated garage doors with a wide range of modern styles to update your home’s exterior appearance and increase garage security. Steel garage doors are an especially popular choice because of their durability and numerous design options tailored to customer needs from which homeowners can choose.

Side Lock the Garage Door

You can close the garage door from the inside with a side lock for the garage door. This lock is attached to the inside of the garage door. The lock pushes the latch into the vertical rail of the garage door and locks the garage door. Your garage door may not have an area where the shutter can slide. Most garage doors have a square recess that can be removed. The side lock should be attached to the garage door with 4 screws. If there are no holes, you can drill holes with a hand and metal drill. A side lock for a garage door can be bought for less than 10 USD. Installation of the side lock securing the garage by a garage door repair in Rio Rancho, MN should take a maximum of 15 minutes.

Use the Remote Keychain Opener

The thing that should not remain in your vehicles is the remote garage door opener. Although it may not necessarily be a high-quality product, it is essentially a key to your home. Many homeowners still leave remote openers hung on the car’s sun visor or in the glove box. Eliminate this potential security risk at home by using the remote opener attached to the keychain. They are common, cheap, very practical and can be taken with you when you leave the vehicle.
