The area you choose to stay in when you go on a vacation can either make or break your whole trip. Whether you’re on a short trip or an extended stay, your locus plays an important role in dictating your movement. It would be extremely cumbersome and tiring to have to commute a few hundred kilometers just to visit an attraction. Moreover, a poor choice of location will dent your pockets deeply as you may pay a lot as transport. If you’re traveling on a budget, especially to a place as costly as Hong Kong, this would be horrendous given you may have already spent a fortune on flight tickets.

The good news is, there’s a better way. Flying from Melbourne to Hong Kong is now easy, fast and convenient. Click the link below to find juicy flight deals.

So where should you stay when you’re touring Hong Kong? Well, that depends on the purpose of your visit. To make that decision feel less like a load, here are some of the best areas to reside.

For first time visitors

Central is both the financial district and the heart of the entertainment scene in Hong Kong, thus if you want to be in the center of all the action, this Central is the place. Apart from the popular buzzing nightlife in Central’s Lan Kwai Fong, there is a host of other attractions available within the vicinity. This makes it the best place to stay for first-time visitors. Some great places to explore while you’re staying here include SoHo, a place known for intriguing contemporary art and chic restaurants and the Peak – a location that has breathtaking vistas of the city. If you only have time for one activity, ride the Central to Mid-Levels escalator. It is the world’s longest covered escalator system in the world.

Some great hotels around Central that won’t render you bankrupt include Hotel Madera Hollywood, The Pottinger Hong Kong, and Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong

Best backpacking location

Another incredible area to stay while in Tsim Sha Tsui, commonly referred to as TST. Dining and shopping would be the least of your worries when staying in this location as there are many such amenities. For epicures, you can enjoy exquisite cuisines at the Spring Deer. Though not as fancy as some Michelin-starred restaurants, you can expect to find some well-executed dishes. The restaurant is quite popular, so you’ll have to queue for a while before you can indulge in their mouth-watering dishes. There are plenty of sites to visit around the area including museums like the Science Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of History. You can also check out the Chungking Mansion if you need to change some money or craving for some Indian cuisines. The nightlife in this area is also quite vibrant and often goes until dawn.

The Panda Hotel, the InterContinental Hong Kong, and the Peninsula Hong Kong are just the perfect hotels to stay in should you fall in love with the Tsim Sha Tsui area.

When touring on a budget

Wan Chai is the main commercial area in Hong Kong that has surprisingly affordable accommodation options. If you are touring HK on a shoestring budget, this place is dedicated to you. It’s also the best place to experience the city’s unique heritage as it is one of the earliest British settlements. A famous establishment in the area is Wooloomooloo, an Australian restaurant made popular by the amazing steak they serve and the picturesque views it offers which sits atop the 31st floor. You can take a stroll in the Wan Chai Heritage Trail and learn lots about Hong Kong’s rich aesthetic history. The trail covers a total of 15 cultural and historical sites, with the highlights including the Blue house on Stone Nulla Lane, and Hung Shing Temple which has been in existence for over 150 years.

Wan Chai has a decent number of affordable yet luxurious hotels that include the Conrad Hong Kong and The Upper House.

Hong Kong may be small but it’s vast diversity and distinctive neighborhoods may confuse you when looking for a place to reside. Be sure to tailor your search with the activities you’re planning to do.
