A guide to understanding the Astro City comic book series:

It takes place in a fictional American city:

As you can probably guess Astro City is set in Astro City a fictional city which is located in the USA.

The first Astro City comic book was published in 1995:

Volume one of Astro City was first released in August, 1995. To date Astro City has been published by four different comic book publishers, Image Comics, Homage Comics, Wildstorm and Vertigo Comics. The latter of which has published Astro City comics since 2013.

Astro City features a large cast of superheroes:

While some superhero comics such as Batman and Superman feature a main superhero, Astro City features over a dozen unique superheroes. One example of which Samaritan, who is a powerful time traveller who first appeared in Astro City in 1985. Samaritan is part of the Honor Guard, which is a group of powerful superheroes.

Another popular Astro City superhero is the Confessor, a mysterious detective that is often misunderstood. Even by his sidekick, who is unaware of the Confessor’s dark, complicated past.

Astro City is also home to a few female superheroes such as Winged Victory. Winged Victory is a strong feminist superhero who will save any women who are in need of help before any men who may call for her assistance.

As Astro City features a diverse cast of superheroes, it also boasts an African American superhero M.P.H, who is also known as the The Acceleration Ace. M.P.H has been gifted with super speed and is also a member of the Honor Guard like his good friend Samaritan.

Astro City boasts a wide variety of super villains:

Asto City also boasts a wide variety of memorable villains who range from a soft spoken lord who organizes regular crime in Astro City as well as the Conquistador. Who is mysterious villain who often hires henchmen in order to do his bidding. Another villain who you’ll read about is the Mock Turtle, a villain who is obsessed with the Alice and Wonderland stories and who is dressed up like the turtle in the Alice and Wonderland books.

The Astro City comics also feature a few civilians who are neither superheroes or villains:

An example of a civilian who you may read about is SteelJack who is a reformed super villain, who is now a licensed private investigator. After solving a string of murders. Some of the other civilians who feature in the Astro City comics include Looney Leo who is the owner of a chain of nightclubs as well as Charles Raymond Williams and Royal James Williams. Who are two brothers whose parents were killed during a superhero battle.

So if you enjoy reading superhero focused comics and are looking for a new series of comics which are less known than your traditional superhero comics, it’s a great idea to pick up your very first Astro City comic.
